چکیده

[To my family for their love and support] iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There are many people I would like to thank for their support throughout my Ph.D. study at Georgia Tech. I would like first express my tons of gratitude to my advisor Dr. Behrens for his invaluable support that I will remember for ever. I will remember his great guidance whenever I encounter a problem in my thesis work; I will remember his encouragements whenever I feel frustrated in my life; I will remember his great suggestions in my job seeking; I will remember his generous help in securing my funding for the last semester. In one word, I feel great honored to be a student working with Dr. Behrens, and he is more than a super advisor for research, also a friend for life, a mentor for career, and a role model for follow. I also would like to thank my thesis committee members, Dr. Carson Meredith for their comments, suggestions, and time throughout the completion of my thesis work. for imparting their knowledge and skills to me and training me for the use of equipment when I entered the lab in my first year; I also would like to thank my current lab mates, and Yi Zhang for their help and being such great colleagues. I wish you all a successful future in both research and career! Special thanks should be given to our collaborators, Dr. Nguyen from Vietnam National University for modeling the dipole field of a charged particle at oil-water interfaces and Dr. Isa from ETH for contact angle measurements with FreSca cryo-SEM v methods; To Dr.

Crude Oil Interfacial Tension Reduction and Reservoir Wettability Alteration with Graphite or Activated Carbon/Silica Nanohybrid Pickering Emulsions

In this research, two carbon structures silica nanohybrids Pickering emulsions were prepared. Graphite and activated carbon were carbon allotropes with different morphologies of laminar and spherical, respectively. The effect of carbon morphology investigated on the related silica nanohybrids Pickeringemulsions for C-EOR. Therefore, nanohybrids were prepared with graphite and activated carbon t...

Core-shell microcapsules from clay-based Pickering emulsions

Core-shell microcapsules are typically made by preparing an emulsion and forming a polymer shell around the droplets. Conventionally, the emulsion is stabilised by surfactants or polymers. Alternatively, emulsions can be stabilised by fine particles; we discuss capsules made from ultrafine kaolin stabilised Pickering emulsions via interfacial polymerisation. This approach has a number of potent...

Pickering emulsion templated interfacial atom transfer radical polymerization for microencapsulation.

This Article describes a new microencapsulation method based on a Pickering emulsion templated interfacial atom transfer radical polymerization (PETI-ATRP). Cationic LUDOX CL nanoparticles were coated electrostatically with an anionic polymeric ATRP initiator, poly(sodium styrene sulfonate-co-2-(2-bromoisobutyryloxy)ethyl methacrylate) (PSB), prepared by radical copolymerization of sodium styre...

Preparation of Pickering emulsions through interfacial adsorption by soft cyclodextrin nanogels

BACKGROUND Emulsions stabilized by colloidal particles are known as Pickering emulsions. To date, soft microgel particles as well as inorganic and organic particles have been utilized as Pickering emulsifiers. Although cyclodextrin (CD) works as an attractive emulsion stabilizer through the formation of a CD-oil complex at the oil-water interface, a high concentration of CD is normally required...

Colloidosomes from Peroxidized Pickering Emulsions

A new approach to synthesis of cross-linked colloidosomes (microcapsules with a shell from colloidal particles) was developed on the basis of a peroxidized Pickering emulsion (an emulsion stabilized exclusively by peroxidized colloidal particles). Peroxidized latex particles were employed to ensure formation of Pickering emulsion. Free radical polymerization was used to convert droplets of a pe...
